Seeding the Future

Here at Arielle Acres for the past couple months we have been seeding and transplanting little plants we have grown from seed inside. Muskmelons, Watermelons, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, tomalitos, corn, beans, peas, lettuce, carrots, broccoli, cucumbers and alot of other veggies/fruit are growing out in our garden right now. To imagine it will all produce fruit and it all came from a tiny little seed. There is so much mystery when you look at seeds, to imagine something so small can give way to something as massive as a plant. However here on the farm we know that some seeds can contain more mystery than we would like. Genetically Modified Organisms aka GMOs are not natural. As their name implies they have been modified by humans in order to "enhance" them. However what exactly are they enhancing? For the most part the main reason for enhancement is pest resistance. Lets take soy for example. Its been genetically modified for years now to make it a more stable crop with pest resistance, it is also roundup ready. But what would make a pest not want to eat it you might ask, the blow fish, the poisonous blow fish. Almost every piece of commercially grown soy in America is part blow fish genetics. That means soy milk, soy bars, soy whatever is all not just vegetable genetics but part fish as well. Corn grown on a commercial scale is a scary thing as well. Not only has it been genetically modified for everything from pest resistance to extra sweetness but it is also grown in herbicide, in fact many corn types cant grow without it(called roundup ready corn). On top of that they fumigate it to keep the bugs out. This is a lot more common than you think. We live in rural America, a place where a guy drives his truck around selling seed to everyone in the neighborhood and looks at me weird every time he comes up my driveway and I ask do you have any corn that isn't round up ready? So What so bad about GMOs anyways? Well for one thing it isnt natural obviously. On another note asthma, allergies, cancer rates and many other "illnesses" that plague humanity have been on the rise lately. WHY? What has changed in the last 20 years that would effect the health of most people? Food. Even people who don't go out to eat junk food are still effected. So obviously its not only the way in which they prepare it(which can also have a big impact on your health) but the way they grow it. The only way to truly get away from it is to buy things that are none GMO. Organic wont save you since they can and do use GMOs as well. Ask before you buy or better yet go grow it yourself. This goes for wheat, corn, vegetables, any type sugar, etc. Many commercial things we eat now a days are actually GMOs or highly processed. Even if you buy seeds from Walmart, lowes and most big box stores you may be getting GMO seed so be careful and always read the packages. If you would like to save your own seeds don't buy hybrid f! seed since it does not breed properly and many of the times the seed will come up untrue to type.

Our vegetables will always be GMO, chemical fertilizer, herbicide free and I couldnt imagine having it any other way. The sweet taste of summer is about to begin. ENJOY!!!!!
